Omaha Hold ‘Em

Switching it up, you have our Omaha games, where you start with four cards dealt face down. To make your final hand you must use only two of these cards. This intriguing gameplay gives you more options for your final winning hand, once the five community cards drop. This is a more tactical version of poker, you’ll find weaker hands like a pair or two pairs often won’t be enough to win. These games often come with a limit on the bets, and the most popular form is Pot Limit Omaha known as PLO. When looking for a game you’ll find tournaments with buy-ins from $0.50 with prizes of $20 all the way up to $10k GTD pots. Cash games begin from as low as $0.02 blinds and there’s always a table to be found.

5-Card Omaha

Making for an even bigger tactical style is your 5-Card Omaha, where you begin play with five face-down cards, not four. Again you need to make the best hand you can using three community and two hand cards. You have a better chance of getting a stronger hand, but you need to have a firm grasp of hand ranges to get the most out of your game. When you’re ready to jump into this thrilling game you can find a table from blinds as low as $0.02 and keep an eye out for our GTD tournament tables too.

Online Poker in Malaysia: Popularity, Trends & Market Size

While playing online poker real money Malaysia is relatively new, there has been an appetite for gambling going back to the 1800s and beyond. From horse racing to a true brick-and-mortar casino, there are lots of ways to play in the country, despite being a mostly conservative country.

There are a few legal ways to gamble in Malaysia, a lot of them around a variety of lotteries such as Magnum Berhad, Sports Toto, and Sandakan 4D. There’s also a lot of sports betting on horses at locations like the Penang Turf Club founded in 1864. It’s estimated that in 2023, gambling generated a revenue of $1.2B, making it the 4th largest gaming market in Southeast Asia (according to Statista).

Currently, there is only one true casino in Malaysia, offering a variety of slots, games, and tables to players. The Genting Casino in the Genting Highlands accommodates most players, but bars entry to those under 21 and to all Muslims. Despite the lack of a pure poker room, you can find a Blackjack game or two. There also seems to be a growing demand for poker in the casino as well as for an online poker game in Malaysia.

As technology increases and many more people get access to phones and tablets there is a large increase in players across the country. With new ways to play, more exciting games, and a huge growth in real money online poker there’s a lot of demand for the game.

The anonymity of crypto poker also makes games more accessible, giving people all over the country the chance to play Texas Hold’Em poker online. The future seems to be filled with an ever-increasing number of people playing and gambling online in Malaysia.

Can You Play Online Poker in Malaysia?

The question becomes, is online poker legal in Malaysia, and the answer is a little more complicated than a simple yes or no. The major acts surrounding gambling are the Betting Act of 1953 and the Common Gaming Housing Act of 1953, which break down what activities are legal. In most cases in order to be a legal gambling business, a license has to be issued to the provider, and they only offer licenses to businesses in Malaysia. These currently include one casino, several lotteries, and sports betting facilities. These mostly consist of Another aspect to consider is the country’s use of Sharia Law.

These 3 separate items are all of the rules around gambling, but there are no specific guidelines about poker online in Malaysia, nor are there any for most other forms of internet gambling such as casinos or sports bets. This creates a gray space that a lot of players are using to enjoy gambling online.

The laws state that anyone who wants to operate any gambling business in Malaysia must have a licence. If you don’t have an official license, you are not allowed to do any gambling of any kind. These laws only apply in the country, if you are registered or operating outside of Malaysia, you don’t have a government license. While this means that any gambling from outside sources is illegal, there appears to be no easy or specific enforcement for players who gamble on sites from operators outside Malaysia.

As with many gambling laws, they were written for a time before the internet. This means that there is a gap between what the law states and where players can actually gamble. One of the main stumbling blocks players can face is making a deposit on a website using their bank account. With the rise of cryptocurrencies and a range of e-wallets being able to deposit online has never been easier.

Taxation of Poker Winnings in Malaysia

As with the legality of Malaysia online poker, there is a gray area surrounding whether you need to pay taxes. The taxes in the country fall under the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRBM), and as a citizen, you would be expected to pay taxes each year.

Part of the process is to fill in a yearly tax report, with your income in Malaysia and other important information. Under the law, any gambling in the state counts as your income, so would need to be declared. However, there are no rules regarding gambling income outside of the country.

While we’ve tried to put together all the information for you, we still suggest consulting your accountant or visiting a local expert for tailored advice. Be sure to track your wins and losses in case you ever need to verify your poker income.

Cryptocurrencies in Malaysia: Can you Buy Cryptos in Malaysia?

With the rise of crypto across the globe, there are multiple different exchanges where you can change your Ringgit for different currencies. While the laws set out by the Securities Commission Malaysia, there are several that have received approval.

This means that you can make a change directly from your account into a crypto of your choice. You can choose from the approved list of crypto exchanges and top your e-wallet easily, and more importantly, legally.

Once you have your crypto, you can then start to enjoy poker online for real money in Malaysia.

The Objective of a Poker Game

In poker, the aim is to win the ‘pot,’ which is all the money bet during a hand. You can do this by either having the best cards in a showdown or by bluffing and making your opponents fold. Bluffing happens when you have a weak hand but make others believe it’s strong, either by placing bold bets or through your behavior at the table.

A showdown occurs when all the betting rounds are complete, and the remaining players reveal their hands. The best 5-card combination wins.

Order of Play

The first position on a table is the dealer, which moves around the table after each hand. A token is used to show that position, and so it’s also known as ‘the button’. The cards are then dealt to each player, going clockwise, and these are known as your ‘hole’ cards.

Once you’ve got your two, four, or five hole cards, the first round of betting kicks off. If you don’t post a blind, you’ll decide whether to bet or fold based on your hand. The next player will then act, going clockwise around and when everyone’s made their move, the community cards are dealt.

First up is the ‘flop’—three cards face up on the table. Another round of betting follows, and you can bet, raise, or fold depending on how strong your hand looks. Then comes the ‘turn,’ a fourth card, followed by more betting action.

Finally, the ‘river’ is dealt and it’s your last chance to bet or fold. After this, any remaining players reveal their hands in a showdown, and the best hand takes the pot!

Blinds & Stakes

At a poker table, there’s always something on the line, thanks to two players putting up a stake called the blind. This is split into two parts: the big blind and the small blind, ensuring there’s a prize to be won in every hand. The blind amount is set by the host or casino, and in cash games, it can be as low as $0.02.

If you want to join the action, you’ll need to wager at least the big blind, or match a raise if another player ups the bet. This first round of betting sets the mood, and depending on your position, you can fold or keep going for the pot!

Hand Rankings

When determining the best hand in poker, a specific set of universal hand rankings applies, this counts every time you play an online poker game in Malaysia. These rankings decide the winner based on the strongest combination of 5 cards.

From the best to the worst, here are the poker hands.

  1. Royal Flush – The highest Straight Flush – A♠️ K♠️ Q♠️ J♠️ 10♠️

Online Poker Tips for Malaysian Players

Looking to play online poker in Malaysia, we’ve put together a few little things we’ve learned here at CoinPoker. These can apply to casual and pro players alike, and they help you turn into a profit player.

  • Play Less & Hands Aggressively. When you play, play to win and play aggressively, with things like value betting, and trying to get the table to fold against you.
  • Only Play When You Want. Playing tired, or because you feel you have to can result in bad choices. Only play when you feel like it and you will have a better game.
  • Play Without Distractions. It might sound simple, but make sure you focus on the game and don’t have a TV show or another game in the background.
  • Fold if You’re Not Sure. It sounds like a bad idea, but folding when you don’t know what you can do, or you don’t know what your opponent is doing will lose you fewer chips.
  • Don’t Limp First. Limping is folding before the flop, it shows a bit of weakness and gives your opponents better pot odds to increase their stack.
