Features of CoinPoker: Why Play Poker Online in Australia with Us?

Are you looking to play online poker in Australia for real money, but not sure where to start?

CoinPoker can offer some of the best and most exciting online poker Austrlia has to offer, and our platform boasts a wide variety of awesome features that you won’t find anywhere else…

The World’s No. 1 Crypto Poker Site

CoinPoker is one of the pioneering online poker platforms in Australia, allowing you to play for real money using cryptocurrency. Not only are we among the few poker sites offering this option, but we were also named the number one crypto poker site globally by CryptoNews.com.

You can join the CoinPoker tables with our dedicated cryptocurrency, CHP, which you can obtain by first depositing with major coins such as BTC, ETH, and USDT and then converting it within the CoinPoker app, or by purchasing CHP directly from the following exchanges: KuCoin, AltCoin, HitBTC, ForkDelta or Yobit.

Decentralised Deck Shuffling

When playing online poker with traditional providers, you might feel like the deck is unfairly shuffled. Perhaps your strong hands often lose to full houses, or your pocket Kings frequently run into pocket Aces.

However, when you play poker online in Australia with CoinPoker, you can actively participate in the deck shuffling. We use a fully decentralised RNG, the first of its kind.

Our decentralised RNG employs a one-way cryptographic function with a secret ‘shake factor’ that’s shared with all other players and CoinPoker. We then use these values to create the final shake value and shuffle the deck.

Unbeatable Bonuses, Rakeback & Promotions

At CoinPoker we offer some of the best promotions and special offers available to Australian online poker enthusiasts.

First, you can claim a 150% welcome bonus on your first deposit (up to $2,000). This bonus is released in installments as you play, with the required rake amount depending on your deposit value.

We also offer a highly competitive rakeback promotion. Every week, you can earn back 33% of the rake you paid in the previous week for tournaments and cash games.

To benefit from this offer, simply have CHP in your account, as the rakeback will be automatically credited in CHP every Monday.

Here at CoinPoker, we have a wide variety of exciting online poker tournaments with a range of buy-ins, guaranteed prize pools and game types. You will also find tournaments with Regular, Turbo and Hyper blind structures.

Poker Games at CoinPoker

Here at CoinPoker we know what you want: your favourite poker games in one place, without having to filter through dozens of different variants that you’ve never played before.

Although we’ve got hundreds of different cash games and tournaments with varying stakes and buy-ins, as well as game structures (including Regular, Turbo and Hyper), if you’re looking to play online poker in Australia you’re probably looking for No Limit Texas Hold’em or Pot Limit Omaha (PLO). If you’re a big PLO fan, you might also love 5-card Pot Limit Omaha, which we also have on offer for CoinPoker players.

Texas Hold ‘Em

Texas Hold’em is probably the world’s most popular variation of poker, where each player receives two private cards, known as ‘hole’ cards, and five community cards are dealt face up.

Players use any combination of their private cards and the community cards to make the best possible five-card hand, and this could include all five community cards and neither of the player’s hole cards.

The game has four betting rounds: pre-flop, flop, turn, and river, and in No Limit Texas Hold’em the amount you can bet is uncapped. Strategic betting, bluffing, and reading opponents are crucial elements, and the objective is to win pots by having the best hand, or by making opponents fold.

Pot Limit Omaha

In Pot Limit Omaha (PLO) each player is dealt four private cards, while five community cards are dealt face up. Unlike Texas Hold’em, players must use exactly two of their hole cards and three of the community cards to form the best five-card hand.

The betting structure is “pot limit,” meaning players can bet up to the current size of the pot. Because players begin with four hole cards, PLO typically results in higher hand values and more frequent draws (when a player needs one card to complete a strong five card poker hand) compared to Texas Hold’em, making it arguably a game of greater complexity and potential for big swings in chip stacks.

5-Card Omaha

5-Card Pot Limit Omaha (5-Card PLO) is a poker variation that builds on traditional Pot Limit Omaha by giving each player an additional hole card.

Like in regular PLO, players must use exactly two of their five private cards, combined with three of the five community cards, to create the best five-card hand. The increased number of hole cards leads to more potential hand combinations and greater complexity. Like regular PLO, betting is capped at the current size of the pot, but the additional card in 5-Card PLO often results in more action and larger pots.

Online Poker in Australia: Popularity, Trends & Market Size

Online gambling is highly regulated in Australia, but revenue from this market is still expected to reach US$10.14bn in 2024, hitting US$12.82bn by 2029. What’s more, in a 2022 survey three out of four Aussies aged over 18 reported spending money on one or more gambling products in the previous 12 months.

Despite the Australian government implementing tighter regulations governing online gambling compared to many countries around the world, Australians have always been big fans of poker both live and online. The high profile success of the likes of poker pros Joe Hachem, Jeff Lisandro and Michael Addamo have helped to grow the game’s popularity.

Live poker is particularly booming down under, with the Australian National Poker League running dozens of events across every state in the nation, with a wide range of buy-in levels and game types. The Australian Poker Tour also runs events throughout the year, with some really exciting tournaments and eye-watering prize pools on offer.

Can You Play Real Money Poker Online in Australia?

The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 made it illegal for gambling providers to offer some online services to Australian citizens, including online casinos. The act also made it illegal to advertise those services in Australia. While these restrictions work with local providers, international gambling websites can still be found online and accessed by Australian poker fans.

This provides opportunities for Aussies to play on websites like CoinPoker. That said, there are few reported cases of individuals being prosecuted for playing poker online provided by international companies.

Taxation of Poker Winnings in Australia

If you’re playing online poker in Australia for real money you might be wondering if you need to declare your winnings to the Australian Taxation Office. Fortunately, Aussie CoinPoker players do not need to declare gambling winnings as they are not considered ‘assessable income’. The exception is if you’re playing poker professionally and using it to make a steady income. In these cases an Australian court would consider the following factors:

  • Is the activity undertaken in a business-like manner?
  • Does the person have specialist knowledge associated with that gambling activity?
  • The scale of operations.

Not that if you do play poker online professionally then gambling costs and losses are tax deductible.

Cryptocurrencies in Australia: Can you Buy Cryptos Down-Under?

Cryptocurrency has become a popular financial asset in Australia, with one million Aussies now owning at least one crypto, while 600,000 have declared crypto holdings in their tax returns.

In Australia, cryptocurrencies are generally treated as investments, and it’s entirely legal for Australians to buy and sell the cryptocurrencies we accept at CoinPoker: BTC, ETH, USDT and CHP.

Buying these coins in Australia is simple—all you need to do is find a reliable and trusted crypto exchange, create an account and create a ‘hot wallet’, either that’s provided by the exchange or via a separate wallet platform.

How to Play Poker Online in Australia?

In Australia, poker has grown hugely in popularity in the last few years, with more and more Aussies hitting the tables online or in casinos, and the nation is home to some of the world’s biggest tournaments, including the Aussie Millions and World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific.

The first step if you’re looking to play poker online is to sign-up with CoinPoker, but what if you’re new to playing online poker in Australia? Let’s take a look at some of the key concepts and how to get started.

Objective of a Poker Game

When you’re playing online poker in Australia for real money, the specific objective depends on whether you’re playing in a tournament or a cash game.

For tournament players, the aim is to be the last player standing by winning the other players’ chips. These chips have numerical denominations, but do not necessarily reflect the tournament buy-in. For example, you might buy into a CoinPoker online poker tournament for ₮5.00, but start with 10,000 chips. First place in a tournament will typically award around 50% of the total prize pool, with around 15% of the playing field typically getting paid.

In cash games, the objective is to win real money by winning pots. Unlike in tournaments, cash game chips do represent your buy-in. There’s no official ‘end’ to a cash game, and you can join and leave at any stage.

Blinds & Stakes: How Does Betting Work in Online Poker?

Betting is the same regardless of whether you’re playing Texas Hold’em or PLO, but there are some key differences between tournaments and cash games.

In a tournament there are two blinds, the Small Blind and the Big Blind (usually double the small blind), and these are compulsory bets that get the action going. They also increase at set intervals. For example, the blinds might start at 5 / 10, and increase to 10 / 20 after 10 minutes of play. The increasing blinds mean players must win pots to avoid becoming ‘short stacked’, which is usually when a player’s chip stack drops to ten big blinds or less.

In a cash game betting works in the same way, and there are also two compulsory blind bets, also known as the game’s ‘stakes’. However, unlike in tournaments, these stakes do not increase over time.

Order of Play

The order of play is the same across all three poker variants offered at CoinPoker. Before cards are dealt, the small blind and big blind are both posted by the two players to the left of the dealer button.

Each player then receives either two (Hold’em), four (PLO) or five (5-card Pot Limit Omaha) hole cards, and there is an initial round of betting. Players can fold (discard their hand), call the big blind bet or raise. The value of the raise can be any amount from double the big blind up to the player’s entire chip stack. If the bet is raised, subsequent players can choose to raise further (known as a 3-bet). This betting round ends once every player that wants to continue has pot the same amount of chips into the pot.

The first three community cards are then placed face-up in the middle of the table (the ‘Flop’), and there’s another round of betting that starts with the player closest to the left of the dealer button. Post-flop, players also have the option to Check if no one before them has made a bet, which is a free move that passes the action onto the next player.

A fourth card is placed face-up (the ‘Turn’) and there’s another round of betting, before a final community card (the ‘River’) is dealt. There is one final round of betting before players turn over their cards to see who has the best 5-card poker hand.

Hand Rankings

Pots are won by the player who has the best five card poker hand from their hold cards and the five available community cards. The order of poker hands is as follows – from the worst to the best:

High Card – the highest card(s) in your hand – A♣️ 10♠️ 6♦️ 5♥️ 2♥️

One Pair – 8♣️ 8♥️ K♦️ J♦️ 2♠️

Two Pair – K♥️ K♦️ 8♣️ 8♥️ 2♠️

Three-of-a-kind – 9♠️ 9♥️ 9♣️ A♦️ 4♥️

Straight – five cards in a row, any suit – 5♥️ 6♣️ 7♦️ 8♦️ 9♠️

Flush – five cards of the same suit, any order – 2♠️ 5♦️ 9♦️ 10♠️ K♠️

Full House – Three of a kind, with a pair – K♥️ K♦️ 8♣️ 8♥️ 8♠️

Four-of-a-kind – 9♠️ 9♥️ 9♣️ 9♦️ 4♥️

Straight Flush – Five cards in a row, the same suit – 5♥️ 6♥️ 7♥️ 8♥️ 9♥️

Royal Flush – The highest Straight Flush – A♠️ K♠️ Q♠️ J♠️ 10♠️

Note that players can also win pots by getting other players to fold. When a player bets a weak hand with the intention of getting their opponent to fold, this is known as bluffing.
