What Was Mario Doing Before Poker?

Before Mario Mosbock became an advanced poker player, he was a professional soccer star in Austria. His youth career included time with SKN St. Pölten U18, and he later moved up to the senior team SKN St. Pölten II, where he scored 21 goals in 48 appearances between 2014 and 2017. He also played for SKN St. Pölten’s main squad and had a brief stint with SC Wiener Neustadt.

Mosböck’s successful soccer career laid the foundation for the focus he shows when playing poker.

How Mario Became a Professional Player

Switching from the physicality of football to the mentally challenging nature of poker didn’t happen overnight for Mario. While playing in Austria’s second league, he became interested in poker and dedicated some time to learning the game.

He recalls, “I was still playing football, but after training, I’d head home and spend hours studying poker hands or watching videos.”

Juggling football and online poker study was exhausting, but Mario’s discipline from his sports background helped him manage the ups and downs of both games. However, his love for football faded, as poker began to excite him more. Over time, he shifted his focus completely, and by 2018, he had stepped away from soccer entirely. A final table in the 2018 Merit Poker Top Guns NLHE event netted Mario over $90,000. Soon after, he scored over $100k with a deep run in the WSOP Main Event. Poker was now his full-time career.

What’s Mario’s Poker Playing Style?

A poker playing style built on discipline, consistency, and precision perfectly sums up Mario’s poker tournament strategy. He has spoken about staying emotionally balanced in interviews, even through downswings. Attributing his temperament to his professional sports background, Mosböck approaches poker in a calculated way, heavy on logic with patience and a side order of aggression.

Mario’s cool head was on show recently at the $25k WPT Global Slam event. With pocket 8s, he found himself in a pot against Aleksejs Ponakovs, holding AKo – a classic NLHE clash. Facing a pre-flop three-bet, Mario called Ponakovs, and the hand went to the flop.

The board of 6, 6, K had Mario in all kinds of trouble, but a small bet from Ponakovs gave Mario enough incentive, and probably pretty good odds, to see the turn. An 8 arrived, giving Mario a full house. Ponakovs led out with a half pot bet, but the ice-cold Mosböck remained emotionless, and he quietly called. The river changed nothing, and Ponakovs moved all-in, resulting in a huge pot being shipped towards Mario.
