New CoinMasters Leader “ggggUnit” Speaks to CoinPoker

The first player to reach six CoinMasters Coins spoke to us about what it took to get here and his plans for the future.

In early May, CoinMasters reached a major milestone.

ggggUnit won his sixth Coin, and is one PEPE tournament victory away from completing the full collection.

After over a year, this competition has already become one of the longest in online poker history. But with ggggUnit’s progression, it’s a signal to all CoinPoker players.

A $100,000 batch of freerolls is on the horizon.

A $100,000 poker career package is within reach.

The CoinMaster is going to be crowned.

Here’s our interview with the front-runner, ggggUnit.

When did you start playing poker, and how did you get here?

ggggUnit: I started playing poker in college during the Moneymaker boom (I’ll be 40 later this year).

I spent most of my career playing live cash games in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and added tournaments about 10 years ago. Had a good score at the WSOP in 2021.

These days im playing online PLO cash and No-Limit Texas Hold’em tourneys, and some No Limit and PLO cash in LA.

Which of your Coin victories was most difficult to win?

ggggUnit: Bitcoin by a mile.

Sunday fields are so much tougher, because all the wizards are playing the bigger tourneys and they add this tourney as well. The final table was very tough, plus i was the shortest stack.

I had to get very lucky to win this one.

How do CoinMasters tournaments feel different from normal MTTs?

Also, which CoinMasters tournaments do you have the most edge in?

ggggUnit: It always makes the grind more interesting when you are playing for first place, so to speak. I take a lot of aggressive actions that I wouldn’t necessarily take in another tournament. I just pretend that the randomizer rolled aggressive every time.

I think the LATAM CoinMasters have a lot of recreational players who like to gamble. That makes it easier to run up a stack.

Are you playing differently now, since you’ve collected six unique coins?

Or, is it business as usual?

ggggUnit: I’m playing more aggressively in the CoinMasters tournaments.

I also try to save up energy for Wednesdays – now that the LATAM CoinMasters are added, it can make for a very long day grinding all six tourneys.

What do you think about the real silver and gold-plated CoinMasters prizes?

ggggUnit: I think they’re great. I put them up on my wall, and it looks terrific.

It’s also nice that silver generally goes up over time. It’s always good to diversify the portfolio.

Are there any other players that you regularly see at the tables and consider tough competition?

ggggUnit: Auzdin for sure.

Were you always going after the $100,000 poker career, or did you start pursuing it after you won your first Coins?

ggggUnit: It wasn’t on my radar at all!

I only started playing the weekday CoinMasters after I won the Sunday coin. Once I got to 3 coins, I started to play a lot more.

How will you prepare for the Championship Final Table when the time comes?

ggggUnit: I’m going to spend a lot of time studying heads-up poker. I’ll be playing against the trainer a lot in 6 max and especially heads up.

Which part of the $100,000 poker career is most important for your future?

ggggUnit: I would be lying if I said it wasn’t the cash.

But I would be very excited to work with Patrick Leonard or another CoinPoker ambassador. Improving my game is always the top priority.

Give one piece of useful advice to players who are behind you on the CoinMasters Leaderboard.

ggggUnit: If the promotion is a priority, then try to play as aggressively as possible.

I think I was playing too passively in the past in the late registration period. Especially in the 22 and 25 buy-ins, it’s probably worth gambling a lot early on.
