What is Heads Up Poker?
Heads-up (HU) poker is one of the purest forms of the game, a one-versus-one match.
Players get heads up at the end of tournaments, as cash games wind down, or at special heads-up tables.
Once you sit down in heads-up games, it’s you, your opponent, and the strategy.

Our Heads-Up Poker Formats
Once you’re inside the Cash Game lobby, filter tables by Heads Up.
Matches run at whatever stakes you prefer, from $0.01/$0.02 to $5,000/$10,000.

Heads-Up Poker Strategy
Heads-up poker is a battle of one-on-one aggression, where position and adaptability matter more than ever.
These four tips will help you act more effectively, protect your chips, and be a stronger heads-up player.
In heads-up play, the button is also the small blind. You act first before the flop but last on every street after it, which is a huge advantage.
Use it by raising roughly 70 to 85 percent of your hands, with a small raise of 2 to 2.5 big blinds.
Hands like K-4 offsuit or 7-6 offsuit, which you would fold at a full table, are profitable raises here.
Folding too often from the button simply hands your opponent free chips.
Your opponent will attack your big blind constantly, and folding too much makes you easy to run over.
Re-raise your strongest hands plus some suited hands like T-7 or 5-4 as bluffs, so the button can’t steal cheaply.
Losing a few chips from the big blind is normal. The goal is to lose as few as possible.
With wide ranges, most flops miss both players, so the one who bets often wins the pot.
- When you raised before the flop, make frequent small continuation bets of about one third of the pot.
- When you called from the big blind, fight back by check-raising some of those small bets with strong hands and good draws.
Remember that hand values go up in heads up. games Top pair, and sometimes even middle pair, is usually strong enough to bet for value.
Heads-up, you see your opponent’s habits every single hand, and they see yours.
Look for simple patterns and react quickly.
- If they fold to raises often, raise more.
- If they call everything, cut back on bluffs and bet your good hands bigger.
- If they never check-raise, bet more medium-strength hands for value.
At the same time, vary your bet sizes and timing so you stay hard to read. The player who adjusts first usually has a far better chance to win the match.
